Good Faith Estimate

Your Right to a Good Faith Estimate

Under the federal No Surprises Act, health care providers are required to give clients who are uninsured or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy.

What this means for you:

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of the total expected cost of your care, including psychotherapy services, before you begin treatment. You may also request an estimate at any time before scheduling a service.

Your Good Faith Estimate will include the expected charges for the services you are likely to receive, based on your treatment plan. Because therapy is individualized and the length of treatment varies, your estimate may be based on the anticipated number of sessions over a defined period, and it can be updated as your treatment plan evolves.

If your bill is higher than your estimate:

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you have the right to dispute the bill through a federal patient-provider dispute resolution process.

Keep your estimate:

Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate for your records.
